Best of 2019

Our year end BEST OF series has become one of the most popular staples in our annual programming. It’s always a fun programme to put together – a chance to bring back some favourites and throw a spotlight on some gems that may be were overlooked before. Our aim is to reflect the quality, diversity and depth of this year’s cinema.
This year’s selection features 15 titles. Seven of them are directed or co-directed by women. Two of them are Canadian, including Vancouver’s own The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open. One of them is a theatrical premiere for Vancouver, Jennifer Kent’s colonial nightmare, The Nightingale (a film we have been trying to bring here for months…) There are two documentaries, nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up and Honeyland. There is one film from Latin America (Monos), one from Africa (Atlantics), one from Australia (Nightingale); one from China (Ash is Purest White); three from Europe and six from the US.
There is also one glaring omission… a certain, much beloved Korean film, which has proven such a runaway hit the distributors felt they might just be able to keep it on screen at your local multiplex right through December and roll that into the (inevitable) Oscar campaign. We’re thrilled for the success of Bong Joon-ho, an old friend of our festival, and invite you to come sample some of the highlights of what has been another very good year for movies.
