Rupture returns June 6-9, 2019 for another showcase of genre cinema fueled by artistry, originality and adventurousness.
Opening the second edition of Rupture will be an exclusive sneak preview of The Dead Don’t Die, which sees Jim Jarmusch once again rewriting the genre rulebook. The four-day event also boasts the Canadian Premiere of The Art of Self-Defense, Riley Stearns’ black (belt) comedy takedown of toxic masculinity and the Western Canadian Premieres of The Cannibal Club, Guto Parente’s audacious Brazilian class satire, and Nightmare Cinema, an alternately giddy, gory and grim anthology film courtesy of certified masters of horror Alejandro Brugués, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Ryuhei Kitamura and David Slade.
The odds on favourite for “Best Dressed” at Rupture are Knife+Heart, Yann Gonzalez’s sexy, stylish disco-era giallo, and In Fabric, the latest suspenseful, sensory-rich oddity from VIFF favourite Peter Strickland (The Duke of Burgundy). Meanwhile, human nature takes a turn for the worse in the complementary Ariana, a Scandinavian lost-in-space odyssey from Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja, and Harpoon, a Grand-Guignol-at-sea from Vancouverite Rob Grant. The cosmos also looms large in All the Gods in the Sky, a deranged sci-fi fairy tale from Quarxx. And not to be missed is Terror Nullius, Soda_Jerk’s outrageous collage film that sees all of Australian cinema collide in a shared universe. Like every other title in Rupture, it needs to be seen to be believed!
