Lance Oppenheim’s Some Kind of Heaven is an odyssey into the sprawling surreal wonderland that is The Villages, America’s largest retirement community. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Lo’s Stray offers a dogs’-eye view of Istanbul’s streets, allowing us to run with the canines who roam them. Both of these stunning debut features have earned prestigious awards and rave reviews, so we’re thrilled to chat with these indie documentarians about the unique approaches they used to bring these stories to life.

Part survival drama, part coming-of-age story, The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls after a plane crash leaves them stranded on a deserted island. This series boasts a predominantly female production team: 9 leads, 6 directors, 4 executive producers, 4 writers, and a stunt coordinator. We’re thrilled to host Sarah Streicher, creator, and Amy Harris, showrunner, to talk about the show’s cross-genre storytelling and its addictive, adrenaline-laced cocktail of drama, mystery and tension.

Shiva Baby, Emma Seligman's feature debut, is a darkly comic, utterly chaotic coming-of-age story. Trapped between her parents, sugar daddy and ex-girlfriend at a funeral, Danielle is left to grapple with issues around sex, family, Jewish tradition and independence. An audience favourite at several major festivals, the film has particularly struck a chord with young queer women. We discussed Emma's process of orchestrating claustrophobic comedy while creating space for representation on screen.
